What is a monster?

To be considered a monster, what attributes must you posses? Is it about outward appearance, behavior, personal thoughts and views? If Grendel has the mind of a human and is able to have his own ideas and thoughts, should he still be considered a monster? Grendel has been isolated from society for the majority of his life, so he has not had the chance to interact with human beings. Should he still be an outcast of society?

I believe behavior is what truely makes a monster a monster. Using appearance to judge is ignorant and shallow. The scariest looking person or thing could also be the kindest, yet a main portion of society would only consider outward appearance as a deciding factor of what or who is a monster. As for personal views or thoughts, everyone has an inappropriate thought at some point in their lives. Thoughts are also very private, so how can a being be judged on something invisible? Unlike these two factors, behavior is something that can be easily observed, and usually reflects what a being is really feeling or thinking. Also, behavior is the only factor which may severely impact other people or things. Therefore, behavior is the only measurable characteristic in this case.

Monstrous behavior is characterized when behavior is mean-spirited. If someone behaves monstrously, individuals may shun that individual as a way to avoid the monster and their behavior. Many individuals behave monstrously due to past pain and traumatic events. Confronting a monster is difficult to do, as fear is a protective important feeling and our first thought should and must be to remain safe and not risk harm.
Individuals also act monster like when they do not get enough sleep and drink too much monster!!!!

Just wondering if you can share with me, since I have not read the book...what thoughts does Grendel have that are human like or unlike a monster? Is Grendel more a monster or more human?

Grendel's behaviors display monster-like qualities. He devours humans for pure amusement, for example. But, unlike his mother, he realizes that he exists and that his actions have reactions. He searches to find his life's purpose and struggles with that search the way humans do. He also longs to be accepted, but doesn't know which group he wnats to accepted into. As the video we have created shows, grendel can speak and show human-like emotions, while his mother who is considered to be purely a monster including her thoughts, cannot experience the variety of emotions that Grendel can. Nor can she speak.
